Quality of the workplace affects mental health

A study published in the "Occupational and Environmental Medicine" shows that poorly paid job or job of short duration can adversely affect mental health as much as unemployment.

Unemployment among people generally is associated with worse mental health than work engagement. In this way policies of many countries are aimed at reducing the risks of psychosocial wellbeing arising from unemployment, without taking into account the impact on quality of work.

In the research were examined over 7000 people in Australia. Among those who were employed psychosocial quality of work was rated according to criteria relating to the complexity of the tasks, the degree of superiority in performance, workplace safety, and the amount of the salary in relation to the work performed.

According to the results, mental health was worse among the unemployed, which is not surprising. But if we take into account other factors such as education and marital status, mental health among the unemployed approaches to mental health among employees who worked in workplace with poor quality.

Among those who have job with the lowest quality according the study is noticed biggest decline in mental health over time. The study shows that there is a proportional relationship between poor working conditions and mental health, each parameter further exacerbated mental health.

In conclusion, the health benefits derived from finding a new job after a period of unemployment depend on the quality of the new workplace. In this regard the employment on a workplace with high quality greatly enhances the psychosocial well being, while beginning work with the job of poor quality further deteriorates mental health.
